My dad, William Mirfin Pte (Nelson) was in the 24th. He passed away in 1953. Wish I had known about the final Beating of Retreat. I always go the the Anzac Parade in Auckland where we live. Thanks for this posting though, amazing how I found this it by pure accident yesterday after returning from Nelson, where we spent our holidays.

My brother & I went to the Beat Retreat of the 24th Battalion. We figured our father Jack Ryan & his brother Tom Ryan of Niho Niho were there at the beginning so we should be there at the end. They were only 2 of the 100 odd of the original battalion who survived the war, Dad still as a fighting soldier and Tom as a POW. Tom is still alive today and willing now to tell it how it was - how could they forget!
Like the writer above we are proud to be New Zealanders.
